The Athi water development agency that manages and maintains the Karemenu dam has this evening issued an advisory to those nearby.
According to the agency, the current water level are just less than half a meter short of the spilling level.
Those living or farming near the rivers where water from the
spillway is channeled have been asked to be on the lookout.
The Agency has disclosed that Karimenu II Dam is currently 89.9% full, storing more than 20 Billion litres of water. The dam is filling at a rate of 4.4% and is expected to spill over by Sunday 26th November 2023.
The spillway design has flood control, and drainage works providing safety to downstream areas against failure by overtopping during the Elnino rains.
The agency has also prepared an Emergency Response Plan that highlights all possible failure modes of the dam and their related emergency responses. They will be providing regular updates on the dam filling progress.
