Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry CS Hon soipan tuya yesterday announced the tree planting drive set for Monday next year aims at attaining a target to grow 500 million trees countrywide.
billion trees each year. For this short rain season (October to December 2023), we target to grow 500 million trees and during the long rains period of April-June 2024, we will grow 1 billion seedlings, to reach our target."
In a presser, Tuya said that Monday which has since been gazetted as a public holiday by her Interior counterpart Prof Kithure Kindiki would only mark the beginning of the drive that shall go on during all rain seasons henceforth in a bid to attain the ambitious 15 billion trees target by 2032.
The CS went further to highlight an elaborate plan by the government that will see the National Government Administration Officers, NGAOs, and sub-county environment committees oversee tree planting at the grassroot level.
To help ease the tracking of the tree growing progress, CS Tuya said the ministry has put up an application, Jaza Miti, that Kenyans can download from playstore and record all their tree growing activities.
The tree growing drive will be launched on Monday by President William Ruto who will undertake tree planting in Makueni, with tree growing activities following thereafter across all the 47 counties.
