In collaboration with the county governments and partners, the ministry of health advises:
1. Aviod crossing swollen rivers to prevent drowning.
2. Move from hilly, landslide and flood-prone areas to ensure safety. 3. Treat water for drinking and domestic use. 4. Practice sanitation and hygiene by washing hands regularly. 5. Use latrine for waste disposal
and wash hands afterwards. 6. Report and seek immediate treatment for health issues at the nearest facility.
DP Rigathi Gachagua told media on Friday that ”The government has mobilized technical and financial resources to enhance the response to the floods.”
"We are working with development partners to distribute food and non-food items to tens of families affected in order to prevent escalation of the humanitarian situation," he added.
The increased rainfall is a consequence of El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) confirmed that steps have been taken to address and prevent severe consequences. Aircrafts have also been deployed to evacuate affected families to safer locations. In Mombasa, the Kenya Red Cross had to deploy boats to evacuate residents of Bombolulu and Kisauni whose houses were submerged by flood waters.
