President William Ruto on Thursday announced a paradigm shift that will seek to enhance the role of the National Youth Service, NYS in nation building.
Address the nation in his inaugural state of the nation address in a joint sitting of parliament, the president explained the core mandate the often controversial
institution in harnessing nationhood.
"In order to entrench our all-of-society coalition, we have resolved to enhance diversity and inclusion, by expanding enrollment into the National Youth Service (NYS) as an agency to capture young people at the bottom of the pyramid."
The head of state further stating that the government would be doubling the recruitment to 40,000 to ensure the representation of every corner of this country.
To cap it all, the president directed that, " 80% of future recruits to all our national security services will be from among the well-trained, talented and committed young men and women who have undergone training at NYS."
Public service CS Moses Kuria thanked the president for committing to re-engineer the NYS to have it play a more central role in public service.
