In a schedule released by Environment, Climate Change and Forestry CS Hon Soipan Tuya, all cabinet Secretaries have been tasked with spearheading the tree planting exercise today.
The President will set the stage for the national tree planting when he will preside over a tree planting exercise at the Kiu Wetland,
Makueni.
Thereafter, cabinet Secretaries will launch the exercises across all the 47 counties.
The government has provided 150 million tree seedlings for today's tree planting exercise, with a season target of 500 million trees.
Speaking on Citizen tv on Sunday evening, Soipan revealed that the National Government Administration Officers, NGAOs, will oversee the distribution of the free seedlings to the grassroot level across the country.
The NGAOs will also work together with the sub-county environment committees across the country to ensure the survival of most of the trees to be planted, the CS added.
In the schedule, Interior CS Prof Kithure Kindiki will spearhead the exercise in 5 counties of Turkana, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera and Marsabit; Kipchumba Murkomen will be in Mombasa and Homabay counties, Moses Kuria in Kisumu and Siaya, Rebecca Miano in Embu and Narok, Duale in Nakuru and Isiolo, Alice Wahome in Nyeri and Laikipia, Prof Njuguna Ndung'u in Nyandarua and Machakos.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi will be in Kirinyaga and Tharaka Nithi, Florence Bore in Bomet and Nyamira, Alfred Mutua in Taita Taveta and Kitui, Eliud Owalo in Nandi and Kisii counties.
Peninah Malonza will lead the nationwide exercise in Meru and Busia, Ababu Namwamba in Bungoma and Kilifi, Salim Mvurya in Lamu and Tana River counties.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu will spearhead tree planting in the counties of Migori and Trans Nzoia, his energy counterpart Davis Chirchir in Baringo and Kericho and the head of public service Felix Kosgei will be in Nairobi.
Water CS Zachary Njeru will be in Kiambu and Kajiado counties, Mithika Linturi in Samburu and Makueni, Aisha Jumwa in Kakamega and Kwale while Simon Chelugui will be in Murang'a and Uasin Gishu.
On her part, after accompanying the president and deputy president in Makueni, Soipan will head to Vihiga to preside over the tree planting drive.
