President William Ruto has continued to defend his government's policy to subsidize production over consumption.
Speaking in Sotik on Sunday, the president continued to urge Kenyans to get into farming as this was the surest way of reducing the cost of food and consequently the cost of living.
his day one decision to subsidize fertilizers instead of packed maize flour had eventually yielded the desired results of cheaper unga without much expense.
This year, the president continued, farmers have increased farming acreage and we have had a bumper harvest, getting 61 million bags of maize up from 44 million bags in 2022.
The government initially subsidized the cost of a 50kg of fertilizer from Kshs 7000 to Kshs 3500 in September 2022.
To further improve the costs of fertilizer, the government this year has subsidized the fertilizer even further, down to Kshs 2,500 per bag.
The president urged farmers to make good use of the heavy rains to ensure they grow more maize this coming season.
He further assured farmers that the government had laid down clear strategies to ensure there is a guaranteed availability of subsidized fertilizer in coming years regardless of future unforeseen supply chain disruption.
Maize is kenya's staple food, food accounts for more than 50% of expenses in most households.
